The Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” will remain open longer than previously planned, with producers announcing a new closing date of August 30 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
The musical had been scheduled to close on July 26 but will now run an additional five weeks. By the end of its engagement, the production is expected to have played 2,297 regular performances and 24 previews, placing it among the longest-running shows in Broadway history.
A casting change will accompany the extended run. Eric Anderson will return to the role of Harold Zidler beginning May 19. Anderson was part of the show’s early development and previously performed the role on Broadway for two years. His return follows the final performance of Megan Thee Stallion, who is currently appearing as Zidler and is set to conclude her run on May 17.

Based on the 2001 film directed by Baz Luhrmann, the stage production opened on Broadway in 2019 after a pre-Broadway run in Boston. It received 14 Tony Award nominations in 2020 and won 10, including Best Musical. The production has also set a box office record at the Hirschfeld Theatre as the highest-grossing show in the venue’s history.
The original cast was led by Tony winners Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, along with Danny Burstein and other principal performers. The current company includes Christian Douglas as Christian and Kelsie Watts as Satine, along with a returning ensemble.
The production is directed by Alex Timbers, with a book by John Logan. Its score features a mix of contemporary pop songs from artists such as Katy Perry, Elton John, and Sia.
“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” has also expanded internationally, with productions running across North America, Europe, and Asia, in addition to a national tour.
