‘Paddington the Musical’ Aims for Broadway Transfer Following London Success

“Paddington the Musical” is being considered for a Broadway transfer, with producers aiming for a potential 2027 opening following the show’s success in London.

Producer Sonia Friedman confirmed that plans are underway after the production took home seven awards at the Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical. Speaking after the ceremony, Friedman told Dateline she hopes to bring the show to New York soon.

“I’d like it to be next year to keep the momentum going,” Friedman said. She added that a Broadway transfer is not in question, but timing remains uncertain. “Look, it’s going to happen, I can’t kid you, but we have to look at the costs. Broadway is expensive, prohibitively so in some instances.”

The production has built strong momentum in London following its awards success. In addition to Best New Musical, the show earned directing honors for Luke Sheppard and acting awards for James Hameed and Arti Shah. It also received recognition for supporting performances, as well as set and costume design.

The musical is based on the characters created by Michael Bond and takes inspiration from the 2014 film adaptation. It follows a young bear who travels from Peru to London in search of a home, eventually meeting the Brown family in Windsor Gardens.

Notably, “Paddington the Musical” recently extended its West End run through February 13, 2028.
